Abstract

Eco enzyme is an organic compound derived from the fermentation of fruit peel waste that contains natural antibacterial agents. Streptococcus mutans is a major cariogenic bacterium responsible for dental caries, which can be inhibited by antibacterial substances. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of eco enzyme-based toothpaste at various concentrations (10%, 15%, and 20%) against Streptococcus mutans in vitro and to assess the physical properties of the toothpaste formulations. The diffusion well method was used for antibacterial testing, along with organoleptic, homogeneity, and pH evaluations of the toothpaste. Results showed that 20% eco enzyme concentration produced the best physical toothpaste characteristics; however, none of the formulations exhibited inhibition zones against Streptococcus mutans. This was possibly due to insufficient eco enzyme concentration and suboptimal fermentation processes. The study indicates the potential of eco enzyme as a natural antibacterial agent in toothpaste, but higher concentrations and improved fermentation are required to achieve optimal antibacterial activity.
